When the capital of Vietnam opened its doors to Thailand’s Democrat Party deputy, the air in Hanoi hummed with a promise of deeper ASEAN ties. On Sunday, the city welcomed Isra Sunthornvut, the party’s deputy leader, as she arrived with a working delegation that had already spent days visiting Vietnam’s key institutions and attending a seminar on the role of Southeast Asian political parties in building the ASEAN Community.

The seminar, held under the banner of the third ASEAN Future Forum, was hosted by Lê Minh Trí, a Politburo member, Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee, and head of the Party’s Commission for Internal Affairs. Trí greeted the delegation with a warm welcome, praising the participants for contributing to a discussion he described as a “meaningful effort to strengthen regional cooperation and promote peace, stability and sustainable development across ASEAN.”

During the reception, Trí reflected on Vietnam’s 40‑year journey of Đổi Mới (Renewal) reforms. He highlighted the country’s economic growth, institutional reform and digital transformation, and outlined the development orientations adopted at the CPV’s 14th National Congress. According to Trí, Vietnam is now focusing on building a socialist rule‑of‑law state, improving the quality of human resources, and advancing science, technology, innovation and digital transformation to usher the nation into a new era.

He then explained the Commission for Internal Affairs’ role as the Party’s strategic advisory body on internal affairs, rule‑of‑law state building and judicial reform. Trí stressed that Party building, rectification, prevention and control of corruption, wastefulness and misconduct, and judicial reform form the foundation for transparent, effective governance centered on the people.

On foreign policy, Trí highlighted the keynote address delivered by General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm at the recent Shangri‑La Dialogue in Singapore. He said the speech reflected Vietnam’s perspectives, vision and approach to regional and international issues.

Sunthornvut expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and praised Vietnam’s initiative to organize a seminar for Southeast Asian political parties. She described the forum as a practical and important platform for enhancing solidarity among parties, promoting mutual understanding and strengthening ASEAN’s collective role in addressing common challenges.

The Thai official also lauded Vietnam’s development achievements, strategic orientations and future goals. She affirmed that the Democrat Party places great importance on friendship and cooperation with the CPV and on the Vietnam–Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Discussing bilateral ties, Trí noted that Vietnam–Thailand relations are now at their strongest since diplomatic relations were established 50 years ago, a milestone that began with a state visit by Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm to Thailand. He welcomed progress in bilateral cooperation and within ASEAN, and proposed intensifying delegation exchanges and regular dialogue mechanisms to strengthen political trust.

Trí called for expanding exchanges of experience in building a rule‑of‑law state, institutional reform, judicial reform, improving national governance and combating corruption. He also urged cooperation among strategic research institutions, scholars, experts, youth and women’s organisations of the two countries, and for continued close coordination at multilateral forums, especially within ASEAN.

Sunthornvut affirmed that the Democrat Party is ready to enhance exchanges and share experience in areas of mutual interest, and to continue actively participating in regional political party dialogue initiatives promoted by Vietnam.

The two sides agreed to further strengthen relations between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Democrat Party, contributing to the consolidation of the Vietnam–Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the benefit of the people of both countries and for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
